How Many Porta Potties Do I Need?
A calculator plus the charts behind it: events by guests and hours, OSHA tables for construction and farm crews, and the ADA count for public events. Every adjustment is a whole number, with the source cited.
How many porta potties do I need for my event?
You need 1 standard porta potty for every 250 guest-hours. Multiply guests by event hours and divide by 250, then round up. A 100-guest, 4-hour party needs 2 units; a 200-guest, 6-hour festival needs 5. Add 1 unit for every 5 when alcohol is served.
| Guests | 2 hours | 4 hours | 6 hours | 8 hours |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 25 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| 50 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 |
| 75 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 3 |
| 100 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
| 150 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
| 200 | 2 | 4 | 5 | 7 |
| 300 | 3 | 5 | 8 | 10 |
| 500 | 4 | 8 | 12 | 16 |
| 750 | 6 | 12 | 18 | 24 |
| 1000 | 8 | 16 | 24 | 32 |
Where does the 250-uses rule come from?
The 250-uses rule is our planning method. A standard unit holds about 200 to 250 uses before it needs pumping, and a typical guest uses the restroom about once every two hours. Multiplying guests by hours estimates total visits; dividing by 250 gives the unit count that will not fill up mid-event.
It lines up with the event charts used across the portable sanitation industry. It is a planning rule, not a law. If your venue, permit or organizer sets a number, use the higher count.
How do alcohol, food and long events change the count?
Alcohol raises restroom use, so add 1 unit for every 5 in your count, with at least 1 extra. Food means adding hand washing: 1 two-sink station for every 4 units. Events over 8 hours or multi-day events need a service visit between days instead of more units.
Worked example (hypothetical): A 150-guest wedding for 5 hours with a bar. 150 × 5 = 750, ÷ 250 = 3 units. Alcohol adds 1, so 4 units. Food is served, so add 1 hand-wash station. Or use one three-stall restroom trailer.
How many accessible porta potties does a public event need?
A public event needs at least 5 percent of its portable toilets in each cluster to be wheelchair-accessible, and at least 1 per cluster, under 2010 ADA Standards section 213.2. Round up: 1 to 20 units in a cluster need 1 accessible unit, and 21 to 40 need 2.

How many porta potties does a construction crew need?
A construction crew of 20 or fewer needs at least 1 toilet under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51 Table D-1. From 21 to 199 workers, OSHA requires 1 seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers, and 1 per 50 at 200 or more. With weekly service, we recommend 1 unit per 10 workers.
| Workers on site | OSHA minimum (29 CFR 1926.51 Table D-1) | Our recommendation with weekly service |
|---|---|---|
| 1–10 | 1 toilet | 1 standard unit |
| 11–20 | 1 toilet | 2 standard units |
| 21–40 | 1 toilet seat + 1 urinal (1 standard unit) | 3–4 units |
| 41–80 | 2 seats + 2 urinals | 5–8 units |
| 81–120 | 3 seats + 3 urinals | 9–12 units |
| 121–199 | 4–5 seats + urinals | 13–20 units, or half with twice-weekly service |
| 200+ | 1 seat + 1 urinal per 50 workers | 1 unit per 10–15 workers, serviced 2–3 times a week |

How many porta potties does a farm crew need?
A farm with 11 or more hand-labor field workers needs 1 toilet and 1 hand-wash facility for every 20 workers, within a quarter-mile walk of where they work, under OSHA 1928.110. A 45-person harvest crew needs at least 3 toilets and 3 hand-wash facilities.

How many guests does one restroom trailer stall replace?
One restroom trailer stall replaces about 1.5 standard porta potties at a 5-hour event, because guests use it more evenly and nothing fills on the seat. A two-stall trailer covers up to about 100 guests, a three-stall about 175, and a four-stall about 300.
Questions people ask before booking
Is one porta potty enough for 30 people?
Yes for an event up to about 8 hours. 30 guests × 8 hours = 240 uses, just under one unit's capacity. Add a second if alcohol is served.
How many porta potties for 100 people?
2 standard units for a 4-hour event, 3 for 6 hours, and 4 for 8 hours. Add 1 with alcohol.
How many porta potties for 500 people?
8 units for a 4-hour event and 16 for 8 hours, plus at least 1 wheelchair-accessible unit per cluster at a public event.
Should women's and men's units be separate?
For events over 200 guests, label about 60 percent of units for women, since women's visits take longer. Urinals in standard units help the men's line move.
